Birth, 2-17-11
When I entered the surgery room, I got really nervous. I was 37 1/2 weeks so I wasn't worried about the baby as I should've been, but the thought of going under the knife is a little nerve wracking. The anesthesiologist came in and did my spinal block and basically the second they laid me down, Dr. Allred started cutting into me. It was a strange sensation because I wasn't totally numb yet. I could feel a lot of pulling and tugging and it was rather gross. I tried to just close my eyes and not think about it, but before long I could hear the first cries of my little boy. I cried a little myself at that point and I remember hearing them say he weighed 6 pounds 3 ounces. I remember thinking that was really small, two pounds less than Cole who was two pounds less than Kallie. I think then I went to sleep for awhile because I should've been more concerned as to why they didn't let me see the baby, but I really didn't think about it. I was still trying not to think about all the tugging, pulling and burning smell. They wheeled me back to a room, and my nurse there was fantastic, Weston came in and showed me a picture of the baby and told me that he was in the NICU. I still didn't get too concerned because noone else seemed to be. I was sure they would bring my baby to me as soon as I was out of recovery. I was exhausted and I slept for awhile and when I woke up I was then really wanting to know where the baby was. They finally broke it to me that he would be in the NICU for awhile, and the nurse told me that as soon as the numbing was gone and I could get up she would wheel me down to the nursery to see him. It took until 3 am before I was able to get up, I felt really nauseous and dizzy but we went and held the baby for a little bit. He was perfect and so sweet. I was instantly in love.
Apparently poor little Hagen's lungs were immature and he need a bit of a boost when he was born. I heard him cry as soon as he was born but I guess when they passed him into the nursery he quit breathing, turned completely blue and went limp. I am pretty glad I didn't know about this or see it at the time. Both sets of grandparents were in the nursery thanks to Debi so they all got to witness this. Hagen quickly perked up though and they got him going on oxygen and an IV.
